Certified Organic Products

The only way customers can be assured that they are purchasing Real Organic products produced without the use of synthetic chemicals and GMO's is to purchase products which have been organically certified with a leading independent certifying body. Currently, body care products are not required to comply with the stringent organic food standards maintained by certification bodies such as the BFA and NASAA in Australia and the USDA in America, hence the plethora of so many 'organic' body care products now on the market.

Since water is the primary ingredient in many cosmetics, some manufacturers are claiming to use organic hydrosols, or floral water, to greenwash their products and make organic label claims whilst using the same synthetic toxic ingredients that would NEVER be allowed in organic food products. We believe this practice has the potential to destroy the integrity of the organic name. Do not fall for “natural” or “organic” claims without a logo.

ONEgroup created certified organic products to be a beacon of integrity amongst the plethora of fake natural and organic products. They wanted to support farmers and companies in the ethical and sustainable use of the earth’s resources and to offer products that are truly safe and effective.

These products contain at least 95% organically produced agricultural ingredients (excluding water and salt). The remaining ingredients (up to 5%) can be non-agricultural substances or non-organically produced agricultural ingredients, with strict processing criteria (i.e. absolutely no GMOs or synthetics chemicals). These products bear the ACO logo and may also display the IFOAM and USDA logos if issued.

Certified Organic Products

Independent Certification Bodies

USDA - United States Department of Agriculture

IFOAM - International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movement

ACO - Australian Certified Organic

BFA - Biological Farmers of Australia

Products bearing the ACO logo meet all of the requirements above. ACO is Australia's largest certifier for organic and biodynamic produce and has over 1500 operators within its certification system. Products bearing the IFOAM logo meet all of the requirements of ACO certification in addition to the standards set by IFOAM. IFOAM is the worldwide umbrella organization for the organic movement, uniting more than 750 member organizations in 108 countries. Products bearing the USDA logo meet all of the requirements of ACO certification in addition to the standards of the USDA National Organic Program (NOP). The USDA National Organic Program accredits private businesses, organizations, and state agencies to certify producers and handlers of agricultural products according to NOP regulations.

These products contain more than 5% mineral-based ingredients that are non-agricultural and therefore not certifiable ingredients under organic agricultural standards. (i.e. clay, bicarb soda, minerals). ALL of the ingredients in these products comply with the strict processing criteria for organic products (i.e. absolutely no GMOs or synthetics chemicals). These products bear the BFA Registered Product logo.

Registered Organic Products

The two shampoos, the body wash, and the hair conditioner, each contain one single ingredient that is not allowed in organic foods, which therefore prevents these 4 products from being certified. The foaming products contain “coco polyglucose”, a foaming agent made from coconut oil and glucose, and the hair conditioner contains “sorbitan olivate”, and emulsifier made from olive oil. Please see the Ingredient Glossary on the Miessence Ingredients page for more information on these ingredients.

In 2008 the USDA revised the approved ingredient list for organic certification and sclerotium rolfsii gum was removed. Since many Miessence products contain this ingredient, we immediately made an appeal for reinstatement. We continue to await the results of our appeal. In the interim, as a continued commitment to our integrity and transparency in all business matters, the decision was made to remove the USDA logo from all products containing sclerotium rolfsii gum. Please note that Australia Certified Organic (ACO) and other international certification bodies approve the use of sclerotium rolfsii gum in certified organic products.

Sclerotium Rolfsii Gum Facts:

  1. Sclerotium rolfsii gum is a natural gum sourced from bacteria that produces an instant gel base when combined with water. It is a polysaccharide produced through a fermentation process of sclerotium rolfsii on a glucose-based medium. Sclerotium Gum has natural skin smoothing as well as soothing properties. It is used primarily in the cosmetic industry.

  1. Xanthan gum is considered a polysaccharide in scientific circles because it is a long chain of three different forms of sugar and also sourced from bacteria. It is used primarily in the food industry and is on the approved ingredient list for the USDA logo.

  1. Sclerotium rolfsii gum is noted on both the EWG and the GreenGuide websites as being completely safe. Like xanthan gum, it can also be safely ingested.

We take our certified organic status seriously. We’ve always used only the purest ingredients available from around the world and will stay current on all certification standards, including green standards, designed to disclose the truth about product ingredients.
